Some Sound Advice for Future BMATS Students From Current BMATS Students & Alumni

by Aug 15, 2024

As you consider embarking on your theological journey at Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary (BMATS), you may wonder how you are going to balance work and academic studies.

We reached out to current students and alumni of our small Christian college in Texas to gather their insights and wisdom. Their responses paint a picture of challenge, growth, and, ultimately, rewarding experiences in our biblical studies and our Baptist Bible study program in Texas. Let’s explore their advice, organized into five key areas.

Spiritual Focus and Personal Growth

At the heart of the BMATS experience is spiritual growth. Our respondents emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong spiritual foundation while pursuing a theology course in Texas. As one alum put it, “Pray, organize and plan well.” Another reminded us to “Stay encouraged with prayer, and trust God when things seem impossible 🙏.”

Remember, seminary is more than academic achievement. It’s about “building Christian virtue and humble relationships.” One respondent wisely noted, “Humility is more valuable than a seminary education.” Make time for prayer, reflection, and personal growth alongside your studies in our theology program.

Time Management and Balancing Responsibilities

Effective time management emerged as a crucial skill for success in our programs. “Set up a schedule,” advised one respondent, while another suggested creating “a consistent weekly regimen.” Many emphasized the importance of prioritizing:

“Develop a healthy balance in life: 1st God. 2nd Family. 3rd Your spiritual and physical health. 4th ministry/seminary. If you get these out of balance, your sanctification, ministry, and spiritual health will suffer.”

Realistic planning is key for those juggling multiple responsibilities while attending a Christian college in Texas. “If you are working full time and have kids, I would say don’t take more than three courses at one time,” suggested one alum.

Academic Approach and Engagement

When it comes to academics in our biblical studies and Baptist Bible study programs, pacing yourself is crucial. Many respondents advised taking fewer classes to fully engage with the material. “Don’t try to do too much. It’s ok to take fewer classes at a time so you can absorb what is taught,” one alum shared.

Make time for reading and writing, and plan your assignments carefully. “Make sure you plan out your big papers so it doesn’t get overwhelming,” advised a current student. Remember, it’s about quality over quantity. As one respondent put it, “Take the time you need to fully avail yourself of the knowledge and wisdom of your professors.”

Practical Ministry Application and Long-term Perspective

Many respondents stressed the importance of applying your learning from our theology program in real-world ministry contexts. “You need to be in a church serving so you can practically see how to apply what you are learning,” one alum advised. Remember, “BMATS degrees aren’t your life’s work but they will enable you to do your life’s work.”

Keep the long-term perspective in mind as you pursue your BMATS degree. As one respondent eloquently put it, “The aim is to be theologically trained for the advancement of the gospel and the health of a local church.” This goal requires determination and careful planning, but remember, “it is only for a season.”

Self-Care, Perseverance, and Support

Balancing work and studies while in seminary can be challenging, but our respondents emphasized the importance of self-care and perseverance. “Pace yourself so that you maintain life balance while pursuing your degree,” advised one alum. Another reminded us, “Pray, prioritize and never give up. One day of lowered expectations should not mean a lifetime of the same.”

Don’t hesitate to seek support when needed in your theological journey. “Make your studies a priority, be committed, and communicate early and often,” suggested one respondent. Remember, these are “precious years of life,” so make the most of them.

Conclusion

Balancing work and studies at BMATS is a journey of growth, both academically and spiritually. It requires careful planning, unwavering commitment, and a strong reliance on God’s guidance. As one respondent beautifully summarized:

“If you think seminary is hard and once you finish, it will be easier, you are mistaken. A life well lived for Christ is one of slow and consistent progress. God doesn’t want you to achieve something, He wants you to BE something He will use.”
