Distance Learning Requirements

Computer Requirements for Distance Education Classes

 

A personal computer running at least Windows XP or Mac OSX.  A Linux ‘flavor’ (Ubuntu, CentOS, Red Hat, etc.) may be acceptable if all other requirements are met.

 

An internet connection that is faster than dial-up, such as DSL, cable, satellite, or cellular. Regular access to the internet will be necessary throughout the semester and students are discouraged from relying on public access points that are not under the student’s control.

 

An email account is required and a Seminary assigned email account is preferred. All students enrolled at the Seminary are assigned Seminary email accounts and are expected to check them regularly for communications from professors and the Seminary. Students enrolled in free courses are not assigned Seminary email accounts.

 

Word processing software such as Microsoft Word (2003 or newer), LibreOffice, Corel WordPerfect, or another word processing software product that is also capable of producing documents that may be read by Microsoft Word.  The software must be able to read and write files with the “.doc” or “.rtf” formats.  Basic text editors like Windows Notepad do not provide sufficient features (e.g., spell check) for student papers.

 

A recently updated internet web browser – Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome is preferred.  Microsoft Internet Explorer is discouraged.  Web browsers not supported by Moodle include Safari, Opera, Linux Konqueror, and Internet Explorer for Mac.  If you are using a computer running Mac OSX, it is recommended that you install Mozilla Firefox as your default internet browser.

 

Java must be enabled on the web browser.  This is done automatically for Mozilla Firefox.

 

Pop-ups’ must be enabled on the web browser.  Moodle messages from instructors to students or students to students are implemented using browser ‘pop-up’ windows.

 

A PDF reader, such as Foxit PDF Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader must be installed as a browser plug-in.

 

The Windows Media Player or an equivalent audio/video player must be installed as a browser plug-in.

 

In certain courses it may be necessary to have a webcam and microphone in order to participate in video meetings. This hardware is built into many mobile computers and may be purchased and installed on computers lacking such equipment.
